How Has The Lingerie Industry Changed Over The Past Decade?

Posted on Thursday, 13th January 2011 - 8:24 am by Whispurr

One of the most notable changes is the extent to which fashion is now a key driver of lingerie. Basic ranges and colours such as black, white and nude still underpin the market, but fashion influenced pieces are becoming increasingly popular. This is evident in the recent trend of underwear as outerwear. The previous couple of seasons have seen the catwalks awash with flashes of beautiful undergarments such as bustiers, corsets, longline bras, bodies and delicate camisoles.

The fashion industry has also become the driving force behind the concept of a `lingerie wardrobe`. Women now realise the importance of creating the right foundation under their garments, and also want a daily choice of underwear to co-ordinate with their outer wear, or type of mood they are in. This concept therefore is opening up women`s demand to want a vast choice of underwear to pick from within their wardrobes.

In terms of briefs, the last decade has seen a definate and steady decline in the popularity of thongs, and a move towards fuller knickers, such as Brazilian, boyshort and high waisted knicker.

Increasingly women are also looking for more glamorous and indulgent pieces of lingerie. They want beautifully designed underwear, made from luxurious fabrics such as pure silk satin, delicate lace and chiffon. These items are a pleasure to wear and confidence inspiring.

News Review

A study by market research company `Verdict` forecast that Christmas 2010 was to be the best Christmas since before the recession. Clothing, food and grocery, and health and beauty products were set to see the largest increase. Online sales were predicted to account over three quarters of the growth in spending.
